What is the dry pressure of this gas

3mL of HCl gas is collected over water a temperature of 21 degrees Celsius and 104.2 kPa, what is the dry pressure of this gas

Solution

From Dalton’s law for wet gases i.e collected over water

Ptotal = Pgas + Pwater

where Pgas is the dry gas pressure and Pwater is the vapour pressure of water

Pgas = Ptotal – Pwater

Ptotal = 104.2kPa

Vapour pressure of water at 21dedrees from chats = 2.49kPa

Thus Pgas = 104.2 – 2.49 =101.71kPa

therefore the dry pressure of this gas = 101.7kPa
